IFD OCO Orders: How Entry, Take-Profit, and Stop-Loss Work Together
What is IFD OCO in trading? Learn how IFD and OCO orders combine entry, take-profit, and stop-loss conditions, as well as the risks of slippage and execution.

IFD OCO in trading is a combined order structure that links an IFD entry condition with an OCO exit setup. In a typical scenario, the take-profit and stop-loss orders only become active after the initial entry order is filled. Once one of the exit orders is executed, the other is canceled or deactivated according to the platform’s rules. IFD OCO can help traders plan entries and exits in advance, but it cannot guarantee execution at the exact stop price or eliminate volatility and liquidity risk.
What Do IFD and OCO Mean?
IFD (If Done) describes the sequence of orders: the subsequent order only becomes active after the first order has been filled.
OCO (One Cancels the Other) describes the relationship between two linked conditions: typically, two exit orders are placed at the same time, and once one is executed, the other is automatically canceled or deactivated.
When combined, they form an IFD OCO order. Traders can predefine where to enter, where to take profit, and where to exit if the trade moves against them, placing all three decisions into a single order workflow.
How Does IFD OCO Work?
Suppose an asset is currently trading at 105 USDT, and a trader wants to:
Buy if the price falls to 100 USDT; take profit if it rises to 110 USDT; and stop out if it falls to 95 USDT.
The trader can first place an entry order at 100 USDT.
Under a typical IFD OCO setup, the take-profit condition at 110 USDT and the stop-loss condition at 95 USDT only become active after the entry order has been successfully filled. If the take-profit order is later executed, the stop-loss order is canceled according to the platform’s OCO rules, and vice versa.
This allows the trader to define the entire trade—from entry to exit—in advance, rather than manually adding exit orders after the position has already been opened.
Can IFD OCO Automatically Control Risk?
It can help execute a predefined risk-management plan, but it cannot guarantee that losses will be limited to an exact preset amount.
In fast-moving, gapping, or illiquid markets, the stop trigger price may differ from the actual execution price. For example, the market could move quickly from 96 to 93. Even if the stop condition is set at 95, the order may ultimately be filled below that level. This is one form of slippage risk.
OCO functionality can also vary between platforms. Some systems cancel the remaining order once the other side is executed, while others may use order modification or replacement mechanisms. Traders should therefore review the specific platform’s order rules before using IFD OCO rather than assuming that all trading systems work in exactly the same way.
FAQ
If the first IFD entry order is not filled, will the OCO orders become active?
Under a typical IFD OCO structure, no. The exit orders are only activated after the initial order meets its execution condition. Can OCO take-profit and stop-loss orders guarantee execution at the preset price?
No. The trigger price and actual execution price may differ because of market volatility and available liquidity.Do all cryptocurrency platforms support IFD OCO orders?
No. Supported order types vary by platform, and even similarly named features may follow different execution rules. Can IFD OCO be used for both spot and derivatives trading?
It depends on the platform and product. Some platforms may only offer similar functionality for specific derivatives, FX, or other trading products, so users should refer to the relevant trading rules.
