What Is an NFT?

How Do NFTs Work?

ERC-721 is one of the most widely used NFT standards, while ERC-1155 allows a single smart contract to manage multiple types of tokens, making it useful for gaming assets and other flexible applications.
A common term in NFT tutorials is “minting.” Minting refers to the process of creating an NFT through a smart contract and assigning it a token ID and related metadata. Once minted, the NFT can be held by a blockchain address and transferred through on-chain transactions.
It is important to understand that blockchain ownership of an NFT does not automatically grant copyright, trademark rights, or unrestricted commercial usage rights to the underlying work.
Some NFT projects provide holders with certain commercial rights, while others only allow personal display or limited usage. The exact rights depend on the intellectual property and licensing terms published by the creator or project.
NFT royalties are also not automatically enforced by every NFT smart contract. Whether creator earnings are paid can depend on the marketplace, contract design, and transaction mechanism. What Are NFTs Used For?

Different NFT categories also have different value drivers. Art NFTs may depend more heavily on the reputation of the artist and collector demand. PFP collections often rely on culture and community. Gaming NFTs may depend on whether the underlying game has real users and sustainable demand for its digital assets.
The Bitcoin ecosystem has also developed native digital assets through Ordinals inscriptions, expanding NFT-related concepts beyond smart contract blockchains.
For beginners, a practical NFT learning path is to first understand blockchain wallets and gas fees, then learn about smart contract addresses, token IDs, and NFT metadata. After that, users can study NFT market concepts such as floor price, trading volume, bids, and liquidity before considering whether to participate in NFT trading.
Security should always come first. “Free mint” offers, limited-time airdrops, and wallet connection links sent through private messages may be phishing attempts. NFT transactions often require users to approve wallet signatures, and malicious approvals can put digital assets at risk.
